Introduction (PROPL 2026)

Cyrus Omar opens the third PROPL (Programming for the Planet) workshop by setting out the case for a live computational commons for planetary science: one that does not merely store data under FAIR principles, but that lets anyone compute over it, with provenance, versioning and reproducibility built in rather than bolted on.

He also lays out the day's unusual format: a morning of position talks followed by an afternoon of working groups aimed at concrete action items for what the programming languages and systems communities can build together.
