# Introduction (PROPL 2026)

[Cyrus Omar](https://web.eecs.umich.edu/~comar/) opens the third [PROPL](https://pldi26.sigplan.org/home/propl-2026) (*Programming for the Planet*)
workshop by setting out the case for a live computational commons for planetary science: one that does not
merely store data under FAIR principles, but that lets anyone [compute](https://anil.recoil.org/papers/2025-fairground) over it,
with provenance, versioning and reproducibility built in rather than bolted on.

He also lays out the day's unusual format: a morning of position talks followed by an afternoon of
working groups aimed at concrete action items for what the programming languages and systems
communities can build together.
