Turning Down the LAMP: Software Specialisation for the Cloud / Jun 2010

Workshop paper on the early MirageOS architecture and evaluation at HotCloud 2010. This paper presented our vision of "turning down the LAMP" stack by running applications directly on cloud infrastructure as specialized unikernels. Working with Richard Mortier, Ripduman Sohan, Thomas Gazagnaire, and others, we showed how Mirage could compile OCaml applications into Xen guest operating systems, achieving significant performance improvements for I/O and memory handling compared to traditional LAMP stacks. The work demonstrated that cloud computing offered an unprecedented opportunity to rethink application architecture from the ground up.
