# The Basic Model Interface (BMI) (PROPL 2026)

*2026-08-26 — video*

The [Basic Model Interface](https://bmi.csdms.io/) (BMI) is a set of query and control functions
that, when implemented for a software element such as a model or a dataset, makes that element easier
to couple with other software elements that also expose a BMI. By providing a standard interface for
models to communicate with each other, we can facilitate collaboration and accelerate scientific
discovery.

Talk by Mark D Piper, with Eric WH Hutton and Gregory E Tucker (all University of Colorado Boulder,
and the [CSDMS](https://csdms.colorado.edu/) community), at the
[PROPL 2026](https://pldi26.sigplan.org/home/propl-2026) workshop at
[PLDI 2026](https://pldi26.sigplan.org/) in Boulder, Colorado on 15th June 2026.
