Integrated Internet/Telephone Conferencing
Giving PCs access to the sound streams from telephones offers the
opportunity for the PC to augment human-to-human telephone conversations
with inline audio packets. These data packets can be used to agree on
a common Internet server for high-bandwidth communications, or simply
to transmit short information such as URLs which are often awkward and
error-prone to read over the phone.
To demonstrate this, the audio conferencing application below enhances telephone conferences by indicating the current participants of the call, and the recent history of who is speaking. The application is more fully described in a paper which is currently under submission. If you want to run it in the meanwhile, download the following components:
- Perl IRC daemon (original version modified for lower-latency).
- Telephone Conferencing application written in Java. Requires JavaSound APIs on your platform to be functioning. This software is released under an OpenBSD-style license which means you can use it freely for any purpose as long as you maintain my copyright notice.
