Everybody's kernel hacking

Posted by avsm Thu, 10 Jul 2003 23:17:00 GMT

Had a great time in Las Vegas at SAM 03. The conference wasn't up to much apart from a few interesting papers in our session (one on behaviour-based authentication from some guys at Reading was funny and innovative). We did however hire a car and have a really fun day wandering around the desert checking out the natives.
Back in Princeton, the work's pretty hectic. Been stuck deep in the innards of the FreeBSD kernel for the last few days, ripping out bits of code to test out our cunning new networking idea. We got it to work (late) last night, so now it's the spit and polish phase; the most painful ...
On the OpenBSD front, I finally committed the gcc static bounds checker patch I've been playing with for a few months. It found hundreds of really obviously bad bounds to functions such as strlcpy(3) and sscanf(3) in the source and ports trees. The local compiler gurus (Scotty and Sharpy) have suggested various ways to improve it such as interval analysis, so I might hack on that if a burst of free time holds me to ransom any time soon.
PS: T3 was fun!

Seb gets married at long last

Posted by avsm Tue, 24 Jun 2003 18:57:00 GMT

I went back to the UK for the weekend to attend Seb's reception ... a fun time was to be had by all - Nick took a bunch of wicked photographs which he'll upload soon (hint hint). I'm back in Princeton now, but going off to Las Vegas tommorrow to attend The 2003 International Conference on Security and Management along with Rich Sharp.
Update: Actually in Vegas now, and posting from a random net cafe here ... the conference sucks, but we're having a great time checking out the "sights"; just rented a car to drive out to the desert and check out some gorgeous sand!

Reporting from the armpit of America

Posted by avsm Sat, 07 Jun 2003 18:14:00 GMT

I'm finally in Princeton, after a crazy rush to get a visa (an adventure all in itself), and then the equally crazy rush to get out of my room in Robinson. Still settling in here, but work at Fraser Research is proving to be a lot of fun. I even found a Capoeira class just down the road (they were practising on the street when Scottie and I wandered past). Gonna try it on Monday ... !

Back to the cold!

Posted by avsm Tue, 07 Jan 2003 11:59:00 GMT

Anand and I came back from India a few days ago, spent New Year's Eve in Belfast, and I've jetted back to frosty Cambridge now!
The trip to India was fun, if improbably busy (involving a lot of train and car travel to see a lot of relatives). Pictures will arrive as soon as I've unpacked my digicam and found my CompactFlash interface - I even took some videos with my IXUS from various dodgy taxis and autorickshaws.
But for now, Dave, Rich and I have to finish our paper for HotOS 2003. Back to the grind...

Jetting off East

Posted by avsm Mon, 16 Dec 2002 17:23:00 GMT

Anand and I are off to India tommorrow for 2 weeks! The flight is via Dubai, so hopefully there'll be a good opportunity to go shopping in the el-cheapo Middle-east. Gonna take my digital camera to India, so lots of pictures will go up when I'm back.
Also, Nick has been testing out Movable Type as a replacement engine for Scribe (instead of LiveJournal). LiveJournal is great, but really geared up for big installations, which we definitely aren't.

Currently bench-pressing: 75kg

24 - will it ever end?!

Posted by avsm Tue, 10 Dec 2002 12:19:00 GMT

Finished watching the first season of 24 late yesterday. Scottie and I were pretty staggered by the twist at the end - never saw it coming (still trying to figure out how it makes sense actually).
Just as I thought that the horrible draw of the series was over, I remembered that I had the first episode of Season 2. Damn, more late nights and missed breakfasts ...
In other news, I got invited to the Graduate Union annual party yesterday evening, where the Vice-Chancellor of the Uni of Cambridge was hanging out. But before I had a chance to quiz him on his dodgy stance on intellectual property, he'd smoothly excused himself to go to another dinner appointment. And the guy is bailing out this year as well, grrr...

Macs rule

Posted by avsm Thu, 05 Dec 2002 00:10:00 GMT

I notice that Apple has released IP over Firewire drivers for MacOS X, so for example Nick and I could use that for fast, zeroconf transfer between our PowerBooks.

This is cool stuff - we've played games of Warcraft 3 where one laptop acts as a wireless gateway for the other one via AirPort as well, resulting in extreme comfort for all involved.

This is the life...

Posted by avsm Tue, 03 Dec 2002 16:40:00 GMT

Went to the gym this morning for a hard workout with Scottie and the usual crew. To top it off, I then wandered down to the Cambridge Regional College for a full body massage.
A friend of Eva's is doing her final-year exams as a masseuise, and she needed some vict...volunteers to lie still while she treated them under supervision. I could really get into this massage thing ... all the pains from the gym have magically vanished!!!
