... since I've figured out what to submit for my thesis proposal :-)
I'm going to argue that language research has failed to make life easier for operating systems developers, and that there is a requirement for real high-level languages to make the structure of operating systems fundamentally better by use of type-safety and other such things that have been around for a very long time. The topic leaves me with plenty of breathing room to wander around playing with OCaml, GHC, and also work on the ideas of better web languages with Scotty and Sharpy.
I committed the privilege separated syslog daemon to the OpenBSD repository as well; it proved a lot harder than I expected (Theo de Raadt gave me an awful lot of help with it), so that's another area to think about ...

Finished watching the first season of 24 late yesterday. Scottie and I were pretty staggered by the twist at the end - never saw it coming (still trying to figure out how it makes sense actually).
Just as I thought that the horrible draw of the series was over, I remembered that I had the first episode of Season 2. Damn, more late nights and missed breakfasts ...
In other news, I got invited to the Graduate Union annual party yesterday evening, where the Vice-Chancellor of the Uni of Cambridge was hanging out. But before I had a chance to quiz him on his dodgy stance on intellectual property, he'd smoothly excused himself to go to another dinner appointment. And the guy is bailing out this year as well, grrr...

Went to the gym this morning for a hard workout with Scottie and the usual crew. To top it off, I then wandered down to the Cambridge Regional College for a full body massage.
A friend of Eva's is doing her final-year exams as a masseuise, and she needed some vict...volunteers to lie still while she treated them under supervision. I could really get into this massage thing ... all the pains from the gym have magically vanished!!!

Went to an interesting lecture called "Face to Face with Political Islam", given at King's College by Dr. Francois Burgat. He was basically plugging his new book, but the questions afterwards led to spirited discussion about the lack of leading, moderate Islamic parties in the West, and why this was (the strong Christian/Jewish control of Western media, voter apathy, etc). Also some contrasts to the growth of similar trends in Hinduism, but why that hasn't had as much impact on world politics as Islam.
I think I'll sign up for more of these kinds of talks in the future ... I missed the series of lectures that Edward Said gave here in Cambridge, which sounded fantastic.

Yawn; just hacking NetBSD into booting under the XenoServer. The XenoServer reserves the top 512M of memory for its own nefarious purposes, so it requires setting the appropriate segment registers and tweaking a few defines.
If I can get away from here in time, I'll go visit Claire in hospital with Jon and David with a bunch of flowers or chocolates; sounds like she needs cheering up!
And someone convince David that benchpressing at 11pm is a bad idea please... possibly the worst bench session ever (except possibly that time I dropped it when Salman was 'spotting' me).

Just back from YACB (Yet Another Cambridge Bop); this one was the 'handover bop' and I got voted in as the Social Secretary for the Robinson Grads. First port of call is to organise a ski trip for after christmas, and figure out how to fool the treasurer Dave into allowing me to commit massive fraud (cough).

Went to the gym with Dave, Rich and Sal, and ended up straining my lower back doing a dodgy deadlift. After a brisk cycle ride to the local hospital (punctuated with gasps of pain), it turns out not to be that serious, just pretty damn painful for the next few days.
I'll be back! (ha ha)

Apparently there's a Systema teacher in Cambridge, so I'm going to go along on Saturday and kick some butt!
