We do the monkey-eeeePosted by avsm Thu, 14 Oct 2004 11:36:26 GMT Climbing has taken a turn for the intense, with sessions down at the Kelsey Kerridge climbing wall as well as on the wooden clappers deep in the bowels of the William Gates Building. NT-Hell installed at lastPosted by avsm Sun, 10 Oct 2004 17:01:35 GMT It only took 7 days, 10 phonecalls, and 16 hours of waiting around for engineers to show up to get my NTL cable modem installed at the new flat. The hassle always seems to be getting hold of the installation guys; once they actually arrived, the process took about 15 minutes! I see why this website was set up though... While moving all the computer kit around, I took the opportunity to upgrade my Soekris NET4521 to the latest snapshot of OpenBSD. I use the flashdist scripts modified to include a few extra things such as ntpd and symon, as well as bring it up to date with the latest snapshots. You can grab the custom kernel config NET45x1 and the distribution set. Dont have a cow manPosted by avsm Fri, 08 Oct 2004 10:56:55 GMT While on my way to go jogging with AliB and Kieran, I passed a couple of the most curious cows ever. Every time I made cow-like noises in their direction, they would stop their grazing and stampede over to me for a nuzzle! However, Kieran informs me that this is because he regularly moos to them while cycling into the lab - it's almost enough to make me only eat non-cute food to get my daily dose of protein...
Imogen gets introduced to academiaPosted by avsm Wed, 06 Oct 2004 15:22:20 GMT Lady Imogen visited the lab, with daddy Rich and mummy Kate in tow. Luckily, it happened that we had just finished a paper on the redeployed Broadband Phones that we requested Imogen to peer-review. Although her response was indeterminate, we would like to take this opportunity to thank Imogen for her valuable comments and feedback.
Robinson MCR Freshers Week twists inPosted by avsm Sun, 03 Oct 2004 17:08:13 GMT The Robinson College Graduate Society freshers week kicked off in style with a cocktail party for all the new arrivals. Much fun was had by all (apart from an unfortunate wresting incident, less said the better!) - including the traditional game of Twister into the late hours!
Jon Crowcroft gets hit by a busPosted by avsm Fri, 01 Oct 2004 16:00:00 GMT Eva, Alex, Christian and I went to visit the accident-prone Jon Crowcroft, who managed to get hit by a bus while cycling on Madingley Road! Luckily Jon is in good spirits, but will have his leg in a cast for a while (which really was the most impressive looking contraption ever, involving Borg-like enclosures for his shin!).
We celebrate Redundancy Day!Posted by avsm Fri, 01 Oct 2004 16:00:00 GMT In an emotional gathering of the SN17 elite, AliB, AliT, Scotty and myself gathered at the Castle to celebrate Redundancy Day! Kieran "Mankloda" Mansley was finally given the golden handshake by AT&T Laboratories Cambridge, making him the last employee to turn out the lights. AT&T were very nice to their students when they closed in 2002, making sure they had enough funding to finish their PhDs, which Kieran has almost done now.
Onto second yearPosted by avsm Mon, 24 Nov 2003 18:12:00 GMT Just passed my first year PhD viva, with very friendly advice from Prof. Andy Hopper and my supervisor Tim Harris. General criticism is that I'm too unfocused, which is an accusation that is all too true :-)
